Sitcoms of the 1990s
The 1990s was chock-full of great sitcoms, making this list incredibly difficult to pare down. So, without further ado, here are my top 7 favorites… if you disagree with any part of my list, share yours in the comments!
7. Full House (1987-1995)
This family sitcom straddles the line between decades. Whether you consider it an '80s or '90s show, neither list is complete without it. And Have Mercy, they mastered the art of the catchphrase!
6. Wings (1990-1997)
I think this is one of the most underrated sitcoms of the ‘90s. It was absolutely hilarious and zany. The show featured a great ensemble cast but got even stronger with the addition of Tony Shalhoub as Antonio Scarpacci. Wings also has one of my favorite moments on TV—Helen crashing her Jeep through Joe’s office… twice!
5. King of Queens (1998-2007)
This show is technically more of a 2000s show, but I included it here because Doug, Carrie, and Arthur are such an iconic trio. Many stand-up comedians got sitcoms following the success of Seinfeld, and Kevin James’ show was one of my favorites of that genre.
4. Friends (1994-2004)
When you think of 1990s sitcoms, Friends is probably the most iconic. The fashion, technology, and pop culture are so indicative of the decade. It was a smash success, and people today still debate if Ross and Rachel were on a break.
3. Fraiser (1993-2004)
This show is one of the most well-rounded sitcoms of all time. It has a perfect mix of witty, slapstick, situational humor, and jokes. They mastered the art of “the misunderstanding.” If you don’t believe me, revisit The Two Mrs. Cranes (S4E1) or The Ski Lodge (S5E14). Two perfect episodes of television.
2. Cheers (1982-1993)
Okay, Cheers probably belongs on an ‘80s list, but these are my rules to break, right? And I can’t include both spinoffs (Fraiser and Wings) without including the original. Cheers began as the Sam/Diane relationship drama, leading to some hilarious antics. However, the show slowly shifted to become more of an ensemble with the additions of Fraiser and Rebecca. One of my favorite episodes is Woody’s wedding – An Old Fashioned Wedding (S10E25).
1. Seinfeld (1989-1998)
The quintessential ‘90s show ran pretty much the entire decade and had one of the most anticipated and talked about series finales of all time. Seinfeld was the “show about nothing,” but more than that, they gave us phrases that have become part of our lexicon – closer talker, low talker, sideler, bubble boy, yada yada, regift/regifter, double dip, and in the vault. They mastered the art of the simple yet hilarious episode with the Parking Garage (S3E6) and the Chinese Restaurant (S2E11).
Honorable Mentions:
Everybody Loves Raymond
The Nanny
Sister Sister
Step by Step
Boy Meets World
Becker
